MANILA -- Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos is scheduled to visit Indonesia and Singapore next month in his first overseas trips since taking office on June 30, Press Secretary Rose Beatrix Cruz-Angeles said on Friday.

BANGKOK -- Tourism ministers and delegates from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies convened here on Friday for making concerted efforts to accelerate tourism recovery in the region.

PHNOM PENH -- The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the Cambodian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) in innovation financing, capacity development, promotion of the Law on Public-Private Partnership, said a ministry's press statement on Friday.

The three-year MoU was inked in Phnom Penh on Thursday between UNCDF Executive Secretary Preeti Sinha and the MEF's secretary of state Phan Phalla, the statement said, adding that it was supplementary to the existing memorandum signed in 2019. (Cambodia-UNCDF-Finance)

JAKARTA -- Communication ministers of Indonesia and Malaysia met here on Friday discussing strengthening bilateral cooperation in cybersecurity and telecommunication.

During the meeting, Indonesia's minister for communication and information technology Johnny Gerard Plate and his Malaysian counterpart Tan Sri Annuar Musa discussed various issues concerning digitalization and cybersecurity in their countries, and in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. TOKYO -- Japan reported 261,029 new COVID-19 cases nationwide on Friday, setting a record high for the second day in a row, as the country faces the seventh wave of infections.

The daily tally eclipsed the previous record of 255,534 cases registered on Thursday, with 19 of the country's 47 prefectures seeing record high numbers of daily infections.

Japan reported 1,395,301 cases in the week from Aug. 8 to Aug. 14, the highest weekly number of new cases in the world for the fourth week in a row, followed by South Korea and the United States, local media Kyodo News reported, citing the latest weekly update on coronavirus infections of the World Health Organization.
