THE HAGUE, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Andries Jonker will take over as coach of the women's football team of the Netherlands with immediate effect, the Dutch football association KNVB announced on Wednesday.
The 59-year-old Dutchman succeeds Englishman Mark Parsons, who was fired after a disappointing Euro 2022. Parsons took over from Sarina Wiegman in 2021 and led the reigning champions the Netherlands to the quarterfinals at the European Championships in England in July this year.
Jonker signed a contract until the European Championships of 2025. He will lead the team for the first time during the friendly match against Scotland on September 2 in Zwolle and the World Cup qualifier against Iceland on September 6 in Utrecht.
For a short time in 2001, Jonker already was interim-coach of the women's team and he has gained extensive experience as a coach in men's football during his long career. For instance, he coached Dutch clubs Willem II and Telstar and VfL Wolfsburg in Germany. Jonker also was assistant coach under Louis van Gaal at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
"I have experience working with a group of ambitious, dedicated players," Jonker stated in a KNVB press release. "During the last European Championship we also saw how incredibly fast women's football has developed in recent years. We have ambitious goals, but also an enormous amount of quality and talent that we can build on for the 2023 World Cup." Enditem
