DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's state-run National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday announced the extension of the National Population and Housing Census by seven more days to enable all people to be counted, said an official.

The extension of the duration of the census was announced by the National Population and Housing Census commissioner Anne Makinda, the former speaker of the parliament.

The census that began on Aug. 23 and is scheduled to end on Aug. 29 will now run until Sept. 4.

Until Sunday at 8 a.m., local time, the number of counted Tanzanians had reached 93.45 percent, Makinda told a news conference in Dar es Salaam.

She said the extension was intended to count all Tanzanians and conduct the housing census.

"I am appealing to Tanzanians who have not yet been counted to cooperate with census officials so that they get counted," said Makinda.

Addressing the nation last Monday night ahead of the National Population and Housing Census, President Samia Suluhu Hassan urged all Tanzanians to show up during the census to enable the country to have appropriate statistics which can help in planning for development.

"Better data will help our country to plan for better lives and accountability," she reiterated.

President Hassan said preliminary results of the census will be announced in October.

The last population census was conducted in Tanzania in 2012. Enditem
