YAOUNDE, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A member of the Boko Haram, one of the largest Islamist militant groups in Africa, and two civilians were killed in Cameroon's Far North region, security sources said on Monday.

The army said its forces repelled an attack by the group in Guedjele of the region Sunday night, killing one militant.

On Saturday, suspected Boko Haram militants killed two civilians who were riding motorcycles in Goumbouldi village of the region, said a security official in the region who declined to be named.

The militants intensified their attacks on civilians in the region over the weekend, burglarizing homes and looting food in several villages, according to local media.

Boko Haram has killed over 2,000 people since it launched offensives in the region in 2004, according to security reports and local NGOs. Enditem
