KABUL, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan caretaker government has begun renovation and repairing of Bagram airfield, a former U.S. military base in the country, to make the military airport operational, the Defense Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"In line with instruction of the leadership of the Defense Ministry, the engineering team of the ministry began the work for reconstruction, renovation and repairing of Bagram airport today (Wednesday) to reactivate it," the statement added.

The airport, 50 km north of the capital Kabul, served as the main military base of the U.S.-led forces during their 20-year presence in Afghanistan till late August 2021.

According to the Defense Ministry, U.S. troops had destroyed all facilities at the airport before evacuating the war-torn country on Aug. 30 last year.

"The engineering team of the defense ministry with its limited resources would do its best to repair and reactivate Bagram airport in the earliest possible time," the ministry said. Enditem
