RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Cruzeiro secured their return to Brazil's top flight on Wednesday with a 3-0 home win over Vasco da Gama.
The Belo Horizonte club, which is owned by Brazilian football great Ronaldo, guaranteed promotion with seven games to spare in the Brazilian Serie B season, a new record.
"In a few days we will start thinking about next year," Ronaldo told reporters. "We have to finish this season first and we're obviously hoping to win the title. But rest assured that Cruzeiro will have a competitive team next year."
Wednesday's result leaves Cruzeiro with 68 points from 31 games, 15 points ahead of second-placed Gremio.
Ronaldo, 46, bought a controlling stake in Cruzeiro last December, capitalizing on new laws that allow Brazilian clubs to become limited companies under private ownership.
The Foxes were relegated for the first time in their history in December 2019 with a debt pile running into hundreds of millions of dollars. Enditem
