MADRID, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona's Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo explained his decision to have an operation on a groin injury even though it could mean his missing of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Araujo will have surgery on a tendon in his right abductor in Finland on Wednesday, after suffering the injury in the opening minute of Uruguay's friendly against Iran last Friday.

He was offered the choice between a 'conservative' treatment for the injury or an operation, even though surgery would need a longer recovery time and mean he is likely to miss the World Cup.

"I want to make the reasons why I took my decision clear to avoid any speculation," said the defender in his communique.

"I love my country and I love our national team," he insisted, before explaining that, "after consulting with various professionals, we decided the operation in the best option."

"It is not a question of one thing or another, it is a question of health and in being back at 100 percent fitness as soon as possible," commented Araujo.

The defender, who has played all but one of FC Barcelona's matches this season, admitted that "personally, they are very difficult moments, but I want to thank everyone for the support I have received."

Estimates for his recovery from the operation range from eight weeks (in which case he could have a chance of going to Qatar) to three months, which would mean he won't play against until the start of 2023. Enditem
