JAKARTA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Landslides struck a traditional gold mine in Indonesia's South Kalimantan province, killing six miners and leaving three others missing, a rescuer said on Tuesday.

Six miners escaped the disaster, which took place before midnight on Monday in the mine located in the province's Kotabaru district, said Amri Zuna Kurniawan, head of the operational unit of the provincial search and rescue office.

"Six bodies have been recovered and three others remain missing," he told Xinhua over the phone.

A search and rescue operation for the missing persons has been underway, involving personnel from the office, the local disaster management and mitigation agency, soldiers and the communities in the area, he said.

The location of the mine in the remote area of the district has hampered the operation, he added. Enditem
