HERAT, Afghanistan, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Afghan companies opened an exhibition of local products in Herat city, capital of Afghanistan's western Herat province, on Wednesday.

With the motto of "Move towards self-reliance," the local companies and entrepreneurs put on display their products in 150 booths, including 30 stalls for products produced by women-run firms.

"The aim of holding the exhibition is to encourage local companies and investors including women to invest and contribute to the local economy. You can see the local products in 150 stalls including 30 stalls owned by women entrepreneurs," head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Herat province, Hamidullah Khadim, said in his inaugural speech.

Khadim also said four plants, which have been built at a cost of 50 million U.S. dollars in the industrial part of Herat province, were also inaugurated on Wednesday to bolster the local products.

Appreciating the initiative, Nagis Hashimi, a businesswoman and head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Women in the western Afghan region, said in her speech that "fortunately the environment is suitable for women to work and all supportive bodies, including the government, are supporting the businesswomen."

Minister of Commerce and Industries Haji Nooruddin Azizi, after touring the stalls, said the Afghan caretaker government would continue to support local products and investment in all fields in the country to create jobs and stabilize the economy.

A three-day exhibition of agricultural products concluded in Afghanistan's capital Kabul last week. Enditem
