OTTAWA, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Canadian and Japanese figure skaters dominated the first day of Skate Canada, the second event of the 2022-2023 ISU figure skating Grand Prix series.

Kao Miura of Japan topped the men's short program, with his teammate Shoma Uno coming second. Italian Matteo Rizzo finished third with 81.18 points. China's Jin Boyang had announced his withdrawal from the Grand Prix series due to injury.

17-year-old Miura featured a quadruple Salchow-triple Toeloop, a quadruple toe, a triple Axel as well as level-four spins and footwork for 94.06 points. World champion Uno skated to John Mayer's "Gravity", taking second place with 89.98 points.

In the women's short program, Canadian champion Madeline Schizas grabbed a narrow lead over teammate Gabrielle Daleman.

Performing to "Black Swan", 19-year-old Schizas completed a triple Lutz-triple Toeloop combination, a triple Loop, a double Axel as well as two level-four spins, earning a season-best 67.90 points.

Daleman's performance to "Diamonds" by Rihanna earned 66.65 points at her first home Grand Prix in two years.

"I was very controlled. I just let the music take over, let it tell me what to do, when to jump, and just gave it my heart, and it was absolutely magic. I cannot be happier with it," Daleman said.

Ava Marie Ziegler from the United States came third in her first senior Grand Prix with personal best score of 66.49 points.

You Young of South Korea, the 2020 ISU Four Continents silver medalist, was fourth at 65.10 points. Japan's two-time Four Continents champion Rika Kihira, who missed the past season due to injury, placed eighth on 59.27.

In the pairs event, reigning world silver medalists Riku Miura/Ryuichi Kihara of Japan skated into the lead with their new short program, followed by Emily Chan/Spencer Akira Howe of the United States and Italy's Sara Conti/Niccolo Macii.

Skating to "You'll Never Walk Alone", Miura/Kihara produced a triple twist and a side-by-side triple Toeloop as well as a level-four lift, spin and footwork to earn 73.39 points.

Chan/Howe achieved a new personal best score of 67.39 points with their Flamenco-based program. Conti/Macii's Tango-themed program lifted the Italians to new heights at their first senior Grand Prix, with a new personal best of 66.66 points.

2021 ISU World Championships' bronze medalists Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier of Canada danced to the top in the rhythm dance with a new personal best score of 87.23 points. Britain's Lilah Fear/Lewis Gibson came second while American pair Caroline Green/Michael Parsons ranked third. Enditem
