YANGON, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar opened a new university, Naypyitaw State Academy (NAS), in the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, the state-run Myanmar News Agency reported.

The Naypyitaw State Academy is aimed to develop Nay Pyi Taw into an education city, said Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at the opening ceremony.

Students from eight townships of Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory including the children of civil servants working in the capital city will get access to higher education of international standards by opening the university, he said.

Forming the NAS with the faculties similar to the University of Yangon and the University of Mandalay, it is aimed to become a leading university of the State like the two universities.

The report said the university was formed with the faculties of arts, science, laws, economics, medicine, social studies and sports.

It will offer third-year and fourth-year courses in this 2022-2023 academic year, and will teach other courses in the coming years, the report said.

There are now a total of 175 universities, degree colleges and colleges operating affiliated to 12 government ministries in Myanmar, it said. Enditem
