BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Former Argentina international defender Martin Demichelis has left his post as manager of Bayern Munich's reserve team to take charge of River Plate, the German club said on Monday.

The 41-year-old, the coach of Bayern Munich II since April 2021, will replace Marcelo Gallardo, who is leaving his job as River Plate boss after eight years and 14 titles.

"Martin has received an offer to coach a great club in South America. We did not want to spoil that opportunity for him and we accepted his wish to terminate the contract with us," Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said.

"I played with Martin in the Bayern first team, he has a firm character and clear ideas about the football he wants as a coach. In our youth academy we also have the ambition to train coaches. Martin did things very well at Bayern and we wish him the best on his return to River Plate," he added.

Demichelis, who is expected to officially begin his tenure with the Buenos Aires giants in January, has never held a position as a senior head coach.

Before assuming the Bayern Munich II role, he served as an assistant at Malaga and was the coach of Bayern Munich's under 19s. Enditem
