MOGADISHU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The newly-appointed African Union top envoy in Somalia has called for unity and innovation in the fight against terrorism in the country.

Mohammed El-Amine Souef, the special representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson for Somalia and head of the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), said he will work with various components of the mission and all stakeholders to fulfill the ATMIS's mandate in improving political, security and stability in Somalia.

Souef, who arrived in Somalia on Saturday to take up his duties, toured the ATMIS base camp on Sunday, where he commended the work of troops in support of the Somali security forces.

"The visit has been a good opportunity to meet various components to understand their contributions. I also met the mission support teams, who often work tirelessly behind the scenes to support all of us, including those at the frontlines. I am really satisfied with the quality of work in difficult conditions," he said in a statement issued in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

Souef reaffirmed that the objective of the ATMIS in Somalia is to support the government in creating a secure and stable country and contribute to social cohesion, reconciliation, and capacity building. Enditem
