LAGOS, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Seventeen people were killed and four others were injured in a severe road accident Tuesday morning in a suburb of Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, traffic police said.

Bisi Kazeem, a spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said in a statement the fatal crash involving a truck and a bus happened on the Kwali-Abaji expressway near the Awawa area of Abuja. An investigation revealed the tragedy was caused by excess speed and fatigue.

"The main causes of the crash according to the report are excessive speed and fatigue," Kazeem said, adding only one person was rescued unhurt and the four injured were rushed to a hospital in Abuja for treatment.

The spokesperson advised motorists to always observe traffic rules and regulations.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria and are often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving. Enditem
