MANILA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- About one out of 10 babies in the Philippines are born to adolescent mothers aged from 10 to 19 years, according to the government data released on Thursday.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said in a report that the number of babies born to adolescent mothers has decreased by 22.7 percent in the past five years, from 203,085 births in 2016 to 157,060 births in 2020.

Despite the total number of adolescent births declining, births to adolescent mothers aged 10-14 increased by 11 percent between 2016 and 2020, said the statistics agency. During this period, an average of 5 to 7 births daily are to mothers 10-14 years old.

The data also showed that more than one-fourth of the total births to adolescent mothers are fathered by men older by three to five years than the mother, while those over 10 years older than adolescent mothers are responsible for about 6 to 7 percent of births yearly from 2016 to 2020. Enditem
