YAOUNDE, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- New banknotes issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) started circulation on Thursday in the region.

The new banknotes include 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000, the BEAC said in a statement, adding that the new ones feature "modern security signs that are difficult to falsify."

The decision to circulate the new range of banknotes was reached during an extraordinary session of the Ministerial Committee of the Central African Monetary Union (UMAC) in November.

The UMAC said the 1992 and 2002 banknotes will gradually be withdrawn from circulation in the region that groups Cameroon, Chad, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo.

In Central Africa, the renewal of banknotes and coins takes place in principle every ten years. Enditem
