JAKARTA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo and visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting migrant workers through the implementation of the One Channel System (OCS), a single-channel mechanism for the placement of Indonesian migrant workers in the neighboring country.
The reaffirmation was made during a meeting between the two at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java on Monday.
Widodo said he hoped that the two countries can stay committed to implementing the OCS for the recruitment and placement of Indonesian migrant workers and repeated the request regarding the establishment of a community learning center to fulfill the educational rights of the children of the Indonesian migrant workers, according to an official press release from the Presidential Secretariat.
In the first quarter of 2022, there were approximately 1.63 million Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, according to data from Indonesia's National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers. The number was lower than the 1.74 million workers in the same quarter of 2021.
Widodo also said that both countries had agreed to strengthen cooperation in widening the market for palm oil and fight discrimination against palm oil businesses through the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries.
For his part, Anwar expressed his appreciation for Indonesia's experiences in promoting the development of downstream processes as well as the digital economy and technology, according to the press release. Enditem
