SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of the information and communications technology (ICT) products hit a record high last year, topping 200 billion U.S. dollars for the second consecutive year, government data showed Thursday.

The ICT products shipment added 2.5 percent over the year to 233.3 billion dollars in 2022, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. It marked the highest since relevant data began to be compiled in 1996.

Despite the record figure, the ICT products export reduced in the second half on rising worries about global economic downturn.

The shipment declined 0.9 percent in July, 4.6 percent in August, 2.2 percent in September, 10.3 percent in October, 22.6 percent in November and 23.6 percent in December, respectively.

Semiconductor export rose 1.7 percent to 130.9 billion dollars in 2022, after surging 28.4 percent in the prior year.

Mobile phone shipment expanded 4.9 percent to 14.7 billion dollars, but display panel export shed 1.0 percent to 24.4 billion dollars.

The ICT products export to Vietnam, the United States, the European Union and Japan all grew in single digits to 36.6 billion dollars, 29.2 billion dollars, 13.7 billion dollars and 4.4 billion dollars, respectively.

Import for ICT products jumped 12.9 percent over the year to 152.5 billion dollars in 2022 on the back of the local currency's depreciation to the greenback.

Trade surplus in the ICT industry came to 80.8 billion dollars in 2022, down from a surplus of 92.6 billion dollars in the previous year. Enditem
