JAKARTA -- A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku on Friday evening, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The quake occurred at 19:44 p.m. (1226 GMT) with its epicenter situated 129 km northwest Maluku Tenggara Barat (Tanimbar) district and a depth of 101 km under the seabed, the agency reported. (Indonesia-Earthquake)

MANILA -- Heavy rains which have triggered floods and landslides in the Philippines since Jan. 1 have killed 17 and affected over 500,000 people, a government disaster agency said Friday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a report that it has tallied 17 deaths in five regions from rains brought about by the combined effects of low-pressure areas, the northeast monsoon, and the shear line. (Philippines-Flood-Deaths)

TOKYO -- The Japanese government on Friday said a controversial plan to release radioactive wastewater from a crippled nuclear plant in Japan's northeast into the Pacific Ocean will start in the spring or summer.

The schedule of the contentious plan to start releasing toxic water from the disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, into the ocean, was confirmed at a meeting of cabinet ministers at the prime minister's office on Friday. NEW DELHI -- At least 10 people were killed and several others injured Friday after a speeding bus collided with a goods truck in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, officials said.
