HANOI, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- An art exhibition featuring cat theme has opened to the public in Hanoi until Jan. 29 to observe the upcoming Lunar New Year this year, known as the Year of the Cat in Vietnam.

On display are 76 works of art including lacquers, oil paints, acrylics and colored wood carvings, which were selected from hundreds of entries from 900 applications, Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

The exhibition is a space to popularize the image of the cat, the zodiac animal for the upcoming Lunar New Year in Vietnam, said Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies.

The cat is the fourth animal symbol in the 12-year cycle of the Vietnamese zodiac. In Vietnamese culture, cat symbolizes vigilance, wit, quick-mindedness and cleverness, the news agency reported. Enditem
