KATHMANDU, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least one person was killed and another injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted a western district in Nepal on Tuesday, a local official said.

The quake with the epicenter in Bajura district struck at 14:43 local time, according to Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre. The depth of the tremor is below 15 km, Lok Bijay Adhikari, the center's chief, told Xinhua.

"A woman died after a boulder fell upon her in the earthquake while another person sustained injuries," said Lokendra Bahadur Bista, an information officer from the district.

"At least 25 houses have been destroyed and cracks were seen in several others," Bista told Xinhua. "This is our preliminary report. The loss can increase."

He said soldiers and police officers have been mobilized for the rescue and relief effort.

Nepal is prone to earthquakes. Over 9,000 people were killed in an earthquake in 2015. Enditem
