SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- A cold wave continued across South Korea on Wednesday, when people started returning to work after the four-day Lunar New Year holiday, according to local broadcaster YTN citing the weather agency.

Morning lows dropped to minus 17.3 degrees Celsius in Seoul, the lowest temperature for the capital city this winter.

The northern county of Cheorwon saw the mercury plunge to minus 28.1 degrees Celsius in the morning, becoming the coldest region in the country.

Morning lows in the northwestern city of Paju, the southwestern city of Gwangju and the southeastern city of Daegu were minus 20.9 degrees Celsius, minus 13.4 degrees Celsius and minus 14.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The cold wave was blamed on the cold air from the Arctic that moved south and affected South Korea, northeastern China and northern Japan. Enditem
