ULAN BATOR -- Mongolia has the world's highest rate of cancer mortality per 100,000, the country's National Cancer Center said Saturday.

In 2022, 4,548 people died of cancer in Mongolia with a population of 3.4 million, while at least 6,885 people were diagnosed with the disease in the country, the center said in a statement on the occasion of the World Cancer Day that falls on Feb. 4 each year. (Mongolia-Cancer-Mortality Rate)

ADDIS ABABA -- Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday met with leaders of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for the first time since the two-year conflict ended late last year with a peace deal, official media reported.

The meeting was held three months after the government and the rebel group signed a permanent cessation of hostilities deal in November to end the conflict, restore law and order, and resume services and the delivery of humanitarian supplies. (Ethiopia-TPLF-Meeting)

WASHINGTON -- The Memphis Zoo in Memphis, U.S. state of Tennessee, said on Friday that giant panda Le Le had died.

SANTIAGO -- At least five people died in southern Chile due to raging forest fires, which have consumed at least 8,333 hectares, official sources said Friday.

Interior Minister Carolina Toha told reporters that four people had died in the commune of Santa Juana in the Biobio region, one of the areas most affected by the fires some 550 km south of the capital Santiago. (Chile-Forest Fires-Death) Enditem
