CAIRO -- Five people were killed on Sunday in a fire that broke out at a residential building in the Egyptian capital Cairo, the state-run Ahram newspaper reported.
The five people, a couple and their three children, who lived in the Shoubra neighborhood, were taken to hospital's morgue after the firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, according to the newspaper. (Egypt-Fire-Death)

NICOSIA -- Former Cypriot foreign minister Nicos Christodoulides took the lead in Cyprus' presidential election on Sunday, and will face off with Andreas Mavroyiannis, who came second, in a runoff on Feb. 12.
Christodoulides, who ran as an independent, garnered 32.04 percent of the vote, and Mavroyiannis, who also ran as an independent and supported by the left wing AKEL party, garnered 29.61 percent of the vote, Chief Returning Officer Costas Constantinou announced after the counting of all votes on Sunday.

VIENNA -- Eight people, including a Chinese national, were killed in separate avalanches in western Austria since Friday, Austrian police said on Sunday.
The 32-year-old Chinese skier was buried and killed in an avalanche in Oetztal in the state of Tyrol, Austrian news agency APA reported. (Austria-Avalanches-Death)

ATHENS -- Three children and a woman died after a boat carrying yet unknown number of refugees and migrants sank off the island of Leros in the Aegean Sea, Greek national news agency AMNA reported on Sunday.
The body of the woman was collected in the sea, the Hellenic Coast Guard said in a statement on Sunday. The three children had been transferred to a local hospital where they died, AMNA reported, citing the local Port Authority. (Greece-Accident-Death)

GOMA, DR Congo -- One crew member was killed and another injured when a helicopter of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) came under attack, MONUSCO confirmed on Sunday.
The MONUSCO chopper, which took off from Beni Sunday afternoon, was bound for Goma, in the northeastern province of North Kivu. It managed to land in Goma, the MONUSCO said on social media. (DR Congo-Attack-Death) Enditem
