Pakistan extends condolences over loss of lives in Turkish earthquake

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The government and people of Pakistan extended condolences over the loss of lives and damage to property caused by a powerful earthquake in Türkiye, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"The people of Pakistan stand in complete solidarity with our Turkish brethren in this hour of grief. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for early recovery of those injured," the ministry said in a statement.

"We are confident that the resilient Turkish nation will overcome this natural calamity with characteristic grit and determination," the statement said.

Pakistan stands ready to extend all possible support in the relief effort, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said.

At least 284 people were killed and 2,323 others injured after two strong earthquakes jolted Türkiye early Monday and damaged more than 1,700 buildings, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said.

A magnitude-7.4 quake struck the Pazarcik district of southern Kahramanmaras province at 04:17 (0117 GMT), followed by another magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit southern Gaziantep province at 04:26 (0126 GMT), according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. Enditem
