UNITED NATIONS -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday announced that the world body will launch a flash appeal for donor support for those affected by the earthquake in Syria next week.

"The earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria is one of the biggest natural disasters in our times," Guterres told reporters, warning that "we haven't yet seen the full extent of the damage and of the humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes." (UN-Syria-Earthquake)

DAR ES SALAAM -- At least 12 people were killed on Wednesday night and 63 others injured in a road accident in Tanzania's central district of Kongwa in Dodoma Region, an official said on Thursday.

Rosemary Senyamule, Dodoma regional commissioner, said the accident involved a bus and a truck that collided head-on at midnight on Wednesday at Silwa Village along the Dodoma-Morogoro highway. (Tanzania-Road Accident)

TEHRAN -- The Iranian foreign minister on Thursday deplored the U.S. sanctions on Syria, saying they have exacerbated the situation of the quake-stricken people in the Arab country.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a phone call with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mirjana Spoljaric, in which the two sides discussed the latest rescue and relief operations in quake-hit Syria and Türkiye, said a statement published by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on its website.
