LAGOS -- Five policemen were killed as security operatives responded to an attempted attack on civilians in Nigeria's northern Niger state, authorities said.

Wasiu Abiodun, a police spokesperson in Niger, said a combined team of police and military on Saturday responded to a call about a group of gunmen seen near a village in the state's Gurara local government area, attempting to "attack some communities." (Nigeria-Attack)

OUAGADOUGOU -- About 20 people, including army auxiliaries, were killed in two recent attacks by gunmen in the northwest and east of Burkina Faso, security sources told Xinhua Monday.

A local security source said an armed terrorist group stormed Yargatenga village, Koulpelogo province in the Centre-Est Region of Burkina Faso, Sunday evening, and "About ten people were killed, including two Volunteers for the Defense of the Motherland, the military auxiliaries in the country." DAMASCUS -- A second batch of relief aid from the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) arrived in Syria by plane on Monday to provide emergency supplies for people affected by the earthquakes in the country.

"The humanitarian aid includes winter clothes, equipment, medication, and other stuff the Syrians need," Chinese Ambassador to Syria Shi Hongwei told reporters at the Damascus international airport, adding more aid will be sent in the future. (Syria-China-Relief Aid)

UNITED NATIONS -- Dozens of civilians were killed in attacks by armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) over the weekend, a United Nations spokesman said on Monday.

According to preliminary reports, the armed group CODECO killed at least 20 civilians on Sunday in DRC's Ituri province and burnt several houses, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. (UN-DRC-Attacks) Enditem
