BAMYAN, Afghanistan, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- A 10-day workshop held in Afghanistan's central Bamyan with the objective to promote literacy among people in Afghanistan concluded on Thursday, a trainer of the workshop Mohammad Baqir said.
Funded by UNESCO and implemented by a non-government organization, the OCCD (the Organization for Community Coordination and Development), the program covers 20 out of the country's 34 provinces, the trainer said.
"The people of Bamyan appreciate and welcome the program that helps us to learn and become literate, and we are thankful to UNESCO for launching such a significant program," Baqir, who is a resident of Bamyan province, told Xinhua.
Supported by the Ministry of Education of the Afghan caretaker administration, the program will last for nine months.
More than 37.7 percent of Afghanistan's 35 million population are reportedly illiterate, with the majority of them being women, as many Afghan girls, mostly in the countryside, can't go to school due to cultural barriers and security concerns. Enditem
