KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan police have rescued a kidnapped child in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province and arrested an alleged kidnapper, provincial police spokesman Jumaudin Khaksari said on Sunday.

Following search operations, the three-year-old boy was rescued from kidnappers' custody on Saturday evening and police handed the child over to his family, Khaksari told reporters.

Police have also detained a man involved in the kidnapping of the boy, the spokesman added.

In a similar operation, the police released a child from the kidnappers' clutch in the neighboring Balkh provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif days ago.

Criminal gangs often attempt to kidnap children of well-off families for ransom in the war-torn and impoverished Afghanistan. Enditem
