JUBA, March 9 (Xinhua) -- South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday night sacked Foreign Minister Mayiik Ayii Deng barely a week after he dismissed two other ministers.

In a presidential decree broadcast on the state-owned television, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), Kiir did not give the reason for the sacking of Ayii who is his close ally and had previously served as a minister in the presidency.

The president, who last week sacked Defense Minister Angelina Teny and Interior Minister Mahmoud Solomon without giving reasons, appointed Ayii's deputy, Deng Dau Deng, as acting foreign affairs minister.

Both President Kiir and Vice-President Machar and other political leaders signed a peace agreement in 2018 that ended five years of civil war.

The two leaders and other parties to the 2018 revitalized a peace agreement signed in August 2022 to extend the transitional period which is due to expire in December 2023.

The transitional period will now elapse in 2025 when the parties are to hold elections in February 2024. Enditem
