SAN SALVADOR, March 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 artistic and cultural events hit the streets of El Salvador's capital this weekend as part of the Nuit Blanche (White Night) festival.

In celebration of the diversity and cultural richness of the Central American country, some 200 Salvadoran and French artists participated in the festival, which originated in France, to bring the arts out of museums, art galleries and opera houses, and into the streets.

Inaugurating the festival, Salvadoran Culture Minister Mariemm Pleitez said she was proud that San Salvador's historic center was hosting the event for the fifth time, since it was first launched eight years ago by representatives of the Alliance Francaise and the Salvadoran government.

"It is impressive how culture is taking over San Salvador," Mayor Mario Duran said in his speech at the event's opening.

This year's festival was called Nuit Blanche ECO, featuring the eco theme to raise environmental awareness.

Festivalgoer and musician Roberto Linares believes the event helps promote artists' creations.

"This is the fourth time that I have participated in the Nuit Blanche and it is an event that I do not want to miss, neither as a musician nor as an audience member," said Linares. "These events are super important for presenting the arts."

Nuit Blanche tour is an annual cultural festival of arts, music and theatre in central Paris. In 2002, Paris was the first city to launch the initiative to bring culture closer to its citizens. More countries joined this trend and El Salvador held its first Nuit Blanche festival in 2016. Enditem
