ANKARA -- The death toll from two earthquakes that hit Türkiye on Feb. 6 has risen to 48,448, the Turkish Interior Minister said Monday.

"The number of foreign nationals among the killed is 6,660. Most of them are our Syrian brothers," Suleyman Soylu said at a press conference in the central Malatya province, which was also attended by Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy. (Türkiye-Earthquakes-Casualties)

BRASILIA -- Eight died after a landslide occurred in the eastern part of Manaus, capital of the State of Amazon in northern Brazil, early Monday.

Bodies of the victims have been removed from the disaster site, including four children, reported local media, adding that the remains of a mother and daughter were found hugging under the rubble. (Brazil-Landslide-Death)

LOS ANGELES -- At least eight people died late Saturday night after two suspected smuggling boats capsized off the coast of San Diego, California, authorities said on Sunday.

VLADIVOSTOK -- Russia launched a Proton-M carrier rocket with a Breeze-M upper stage on Monday, sending the Luch-5X relay satellite into space.
