SOFIA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and his visiting Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis called for enhanced cooperation between their countries on Wednesday.

The Danube River, which forms the border between the two countries, should connect rather than separate them and should be used to further strengthen their cooperation, Radev was quoted by his press office as telling journalists.

Expanding bilateral cooperation in the energy sector and exploring the possibilities of building hydroelectric power plants on the Danube was also identified as an area of mutual interest.

The two presidents agreed that joining the Schengen area of passport-free travel is a priority task for their countries. This would further boost the economies of the two countries and would meet the fair expectations of the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania for equal rights in the European Union.

The two heads of state also signed a strategic partnership declaration. Enditem
