Olympiacos remains at top, Maccabi Tel Aviv beats Baskonia in EuroLeague basketball

JERUSALEM, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv achieved a 93-79 home win against Saski Baskonia of Spain in the 29th round of basketball's EuroLeague on Thursday evening.

The win moved Maccabi up to sixth place and closer to securing a spot in the playoffs, for which the first eight teams out of 18 will qualify. Greek powerhouse Olympiacos Piraeus stay at the top the standings with 21 wins from 29 games ahead of Real Madrid and AS Monaco after edging Zalgiris Kaunas 74-72.

Maccabi hold a 16-13 win-loss record, while Baskonia remain with 15 wins from 29 games.

3-pointers by Jarell Martin helped Maccabi take a 29-23 lead at the end of the first quarter.

An 11-1 run, led by Lorenzo Brown put Maccabi up 40-27, but Rokas Giedraitis inspired Baskonia to respond with an 11-0 run to get back into the game before the halftime score was set at 49-45 for the hosts.

Points by Daulton Hommes helped the visitors conduct another impressive 15-0 run to take a 60-49 lead.

However, Brown led Maccabi to regain the advantage at 63-60 after a 14-0 run, and increase it to 72-65 at the end of the third quarter.

Points by Bonzie Colson in the final quarter ensured an essential win for Maccabi.

Wade Baldwin contributed 24 points and eight assists for Maccabi. Brown added 17 points, while Josh Nebo finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Giedraitis scored 18 points for Baskonia, while his teammate Darius Thompson added 17.

In the 30th round, Maccabi will play away against French champions Lyon-Villeurbanne, while Baskonia will face Red Star in Belgrade, with both games to be played on March 23. Enditem
