Olivier wins 10km title at European Open Water Cup first leg

JERUSALEM, March 18 (Xinhua) -- French swimmer Marc-Antoine Olivier won the men's 10km race at the first leg of the 2023 European Open Water Cup series held in the Red Sea, off the shores of the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat on Saturday.

Olivier, an Olympic bronze medalist, finished the Eilat race in one hour, 47 minutes and 56.2 seconds.

Italy's Domenico Acerenza and Marcello Guidi came second and third, with former Olympic 1,500m freestyle champion and 10km series 2022 title holder Gregorio Paltrinieri finishing seventh.

Australia's Chelsea Gubecka won the women's event in 1:54:02.2, ahead of compatriot Madeline Gough, but neither is part of the European series and received no points.

Ginevra Taddeucci of Italy came first among the Europeans in 1:54:04.4, ahead of Angelica Andre of Portugal and Bettina Fabian of Hungary.

A total of 73 swimmers from 13 countries and regions competed in the race.

The 2023 series, organized by the European Swimming League (LEN), includes six legs, with the last to be held in Barcelona in September. Enditem
