CAIRO, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Track cyclists from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and New Zealand left Cairo with gold medals on Friday, the final day of the second round of the 2023 International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Nations Cup.

Germany's two-time UCI World champions Roger Kluge and Theo Reinhardt dominated the men's madison final again, as they did in February in Jakarta, Indonesia, at the first round of the 2023 UCI Track Nations Cup.

The pair won the gold medal in the 50-kilometer race after they did their final lap around Cairo's 250-meter track right ahead of those of the Netherlands and New Zealand, who had to settle for silver and bronze.

In the men's sprint final, it was no surprise that Dutch world and Olympic champion Harrie Lavreysen was crowned, outrunning his Israeli opponent Mikhail Yakovlev in the final lap in the thrilling race. Japan's Kaiya Ota came third.

Later in the women's keirin final race, Japan's Mina Sato secured the gold medal, while Belgium's Nicky Degrendele won silver and Germany's Alessa-Catriona Propster got bronze.

In the last event on the final day, Ally Wollaston of New Zealand won the overall gold medal of the women's omnium, scoring 139 points in total after four exciting races: scratch, tempo, elimination and points.

It is Wollaston's second straight omnium elite title after she won gold at Jakarta's UCI Nations Cup event last month.

France's Victoire Berteau came second in the multi-discipline race with 131 points, and Denmark's Amalie Dideriksen was third with 116 points.

Held from March 14 to 17, UCI Track Nations Cup Cairo 2023 gathered more than 400 track cyclists from over 50 countries and regions. It was the second of the three rounds of this year's UCI Track Nations Cup; the first was held in Jakarta in February and the third will be held in Milton, Canada, in April.

Mohamed Wagih Azzam, president of both the Egyptian Cycling Federation (ECF) and the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC), expressed happiness with Cairo's successful hosting of the event.

"Hosting the championship provides a chance for our cyclists to improve through competing and communicating with world and Olympic champions," the ECF chief told Xinhua on Friday. Enditem
