CARACAS, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela has called for an end to sanctions impacting its people, said Foreign Minister Yvan Gil on Friday during the 28th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government.

Gil made the statements to the state-owned Venezolana de Television from the Dominican Republic, where the Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting was held before the summit on Saturday.

Venezuela has "promoted respect for the fundamental principles of the UN Charter," he said, adding that the South American country has also called for an end to the sanctions impacting the Venezuelan people.

"We asked for a condemnation, which was a unanimous condemnation reflected in the documents. This summit condemns the use of unilateral coercive measures," he stated.

Gil said Venezuela has also made a request to the European Union through the governments of Spain and Portugal for a "definitive cessation and repeal of any unilateral coercive measures against the Venezuelan people."

Gil stressed that the main challenges for Ibero-American countries are to "fight inequality" and narrow the gap between rich and poor countries. Enditem
