BEIRUT, March 30 (Xinhua) -- European commissioner for crisis management Janez Lenarcic on Thursday announced 60 million euros (65.4 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable people in Lebanon, including the Syrian refugees.

"The new EU humanitarian package announced today will provide life-saving humanitarian aid such as food assistance, cash support, education, and health services for those who need it the most. It will also help prepare for disasters and provide emergency response," said a statement released by the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon.

The new package comes on the occasion of Lenarcic's visit to Lebanon to follow up on EU-funded humanitarian projects and meet humanitarian partners on the ground and the Lebanese authorities.

The statement added that the funding comes as Lebanon's population faces increasing poverty levels, food insecurity, and disease outbreaks.

"Lebanon is facing multiple crises, putting more and more people at risk. In addition, the country hosts some 1.5 million Syrian refugees, the world's highest number of refugees per capita," said Lenarcic.

He added that the roots of Lebanon's political and economic crises must be addressed as soon as possible. "Humanitarian aid is essential for the victims of Lebanon's multiple crises. Still, it is not a solution to the underlying challenges," he said. Enditem
