COLOMBO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 were injured when a train derailed near a railway station in Trincomalee in eastern Sri Lanka on Friday afternoon, police said.

Nine women, five men and two boys were injured and have been admitted to a nearby hospital, according to police.

The railway department said three railway carriages have derailed and two railway department employees were among the wounded.

Railway derailments are common in Sri Lanka. However, injuries from such accidents are rare.

There were 29 derailments of passenger trains in 2020, 34 in 2021 and 45 derailments by November in 2022, according to the railway department. Enditem
