RIO DE JANEIRO, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Former goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni has been sacked as manager of Sao Paulo following an inconsistent start to the season, the Brazilian club said on Wednesday.

Assistant managers Charles Hembert, Leandro Macagnan, Nelson Simoes and fitness coach Danilo Augusto also had their contracts terminated.

"The club thanks the professionals for their dedication over almost 18 months," read a statement on Sao Paulo's website.

The announcement came a day after Sao Paulo secured a 2-0 home victory over Puerto Cabello in the Copa Sudamericana. Despite having started the continental competition with two wins from as many matches, the Tricolor have been in poor form in domestic competitions.

They lost their opening match of the Brazilian Serie A season to Botafogo on Saturday after failing to progress beyond the quarterfinals of the Sao Paulo state championship in March.

Ceni, 50, also had a spell in charge of Sao Paulo in 2017, when he led the club to 14 wins, 11 draws and 10 defeats before being sacked. Enditem
