MEXICO CITY, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Alejandro Zendejas scored a second-half winner as Club America edged toward a place in the Liga MX Clausura final on Thursday with a 1-0 win at Guadalajara in their semifinal first leg.

Zendejas broke the deadlock in the 60th minute against his former club when he cut inside his marker on the right wing before lashing home a shot that beat Miguel Jimenez at his near post.

America defended solidly in the final half-hour to stay in a good position to claim their 14th Liga MX title and first since 2018. The second leg will be played at America's Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday.

The winner of the duel on aggregate will meet either Monterrey or Tigres UANL in the final, to be played over two legs later this month. The teams drew 1-1 in their semifinal first leg at Tigres' Estadio Universitario on Wednesday. Enditem
