TEHRAN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Iraq on Monday highlighted the necessity of implementing the border security agreement signed between the two countries in late March, according to the Iranian official news agency IRNA.

The issue was stressed when the new secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Akbar Ahmadian met with visiting Iraq's National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji in Tehran.

Ahmadian said the agreement is a roadmap for ensuring lasting security along the common border, preparing the ground for expanding bilateral cooperation in other sectors.

The SNSC chief said Tehran expects the Iraqi government could end anti-Iran groups' presence in the country within the framework of the bilateral security agreement.

Araji, for his part, voiced Iraq's commitment to the border security agreement with Iran, saying the stability and development of Iran and Iraq help improve not only the two countries' security but also the entire region's peace and progress.

The adviser expressed the Iraqi government's willingness and determination to continue its close relations, cooperation, and interaction with Iran in all areas.
