UNITED NATIONS -- Trinidad and Tobago's permanent representative to the United Nations, Dennis Francis, was elected the president of the upcoming 78th session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday.

Francis was elected by acclamation at a General Assembly plenary session, as his candidacy was not contended.

He will take up the new post in September 2023, to succeed current General Assembly President Csaba Korosi, a Hungarian diplomat. (UN-General Assembly-Election)

CAPE TOWN -- BRICS countries kicked off its foreign ministers meeting on Thursday in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa.

"At today's discussion, we will focus on opportunities to strengthen and transform global governance systems and look forward to solutions to sustainable and inclusive global economic recovery," said Naledi Pandor, South Africa's minister of international relations and cooperation, when hosting the meeting. CAIRO -- One person was killed and five others were wounded in the Egyptian capital of Cairo as a massive sandstorm hit several parts of Egypt on Thursday.

The casualties resulted from a billboard's collapse at the 6th October bridge in Cairo, according to local media reports.

Several road accidents were also reported nationwide, with some people wounded but no fatalities, said the reports. (Egypt-Billboard Collapse-Death) Enditem
