LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Sony's animated superhero film "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" dominated the North American box office, with an estimated three-day cume of 120.5 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, showed figures from the measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

The tally made it the second biggest opening of 2023 so far in North America, behind only the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the third biggest opening weekend for any Spider-Man films.

The film features the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales, which is a sequel to 2018's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." Shameik Moore reprises his voice role as Morales, alongside returning cast members Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and others.

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" holds an approval rating of 95 percent, which is based on 249 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

The film also took in 88.1 million dollars during its international debut weekend, including over 17 million dollars from the Chinese mainland.

Disney's live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" came in second with 40.6 million dollars, pushing its North American cume to 186.2 million dollars.

Another newcomer, 20th Century Studios' horror-thriller film "The Boogeyman," opened in third place with 12.3 million dollars. Enditem
