RIO DE JANEIRO, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo stretched their unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions with a 4-1 rout of Rio de Janeiro rivals Vasco da Gama in Brazil's Serie A on Monday.
Erick Pulgar, Gerson, Pedro and Ayrton Medeiros struck first-half goals before Jair Rodrigues reduced the deficit with a well-taken penalty just before the hour.
Flamengo defended resolutely in the final half hour to ease to their fifth win of the Serie A season. Jorge Sampaoli's men have not lost since a 2-1 defeat at Athletico Paranaense on May 7.
The result at the Maracana stadium leaves Flamengo fifth in the 20-team standings with 16 points from nine games, five points behind leaders Botafogo. Vasco are 19th with just six points so far.
Flamengo's next outing will be a home Copa Libertadores group stage fixture against Racing Club at the Maracana on Thursday (June 8). Vasco's next match will be a visit to Porto Alegre to face Internacional in Brazil's top flight next Sunday. Enditem
