KABUL, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) said Tuesday it has urged foreign organizations to resume work on 32 small and large environment-related projects.
"The international community should not politicize environmental issues. Foreign institutions should resume work on the projects in the field of environmental improvement costing nearly 824 million U.S. dollars, which have now been suspended," the agency said in a statement, quoting head of the agency Hafiz Aziz Rahman.
The statement blamed climate change, drought, floods, and deforestation largely for the environmental problems in Afghanistan.
"Last year, the National Environmental Protection Agency, in cooperation with various ministries, was able to reduce air pollution in the country's capital Kabul and other cities," Aziz Rahman noted in the statement.
The agency also called on companies and the public to reduce the production and use of plastics.
The United Nations Environment Program reported more than 430 million tones of plastic are produced worldwide every year. Enditem
