WINDHOEK, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The government of Namibia will continue to render the necessary support for the mining industry through regulations, policies and legislation, an official said Monday evening.

Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy Kornelia Shilunga made the remarks on the occasion of the publication of a report on the operation of the Rossing Uranium mine, the longest-running and one of the largest open pit uranium mines in the world, in 2022.

In her speech, Shilunga commended Rossing Uranium for being one of the best mines in the country that has built a resilient organization and navigated through uncertain times.

According to the report, the company achieved a sound safety record in 2022 with no fatalities or serious injuries.

Despite global economic challenges and high inflation, Rossing Uranium generated a positive cash flow in 2022, declaring a net profit of 840 million Namibia dollars (about 43 million U.S. dollars). The company helps strengthen Namibia's position as one of the world's largest uranium producers.

Shilunga encouraged mining companies to take its social responsibility and make more contributions to the livelihood of the people, to their communities and to the environment.

"I am convinced that the best strategy is to empower the youth where the mine is operating and beyond, to invest in related sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, etc, as this will in turn provide positive impetus to the local economy," she said. Enditem
