DAR ES SALAAM, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania has identified 260 areas that were used as epicenters of the southern African liberation struggle, a senior cabinet minister told parliament Tuesday.
Pindi Chana, the minister of Culture, Arts and Sports, said the 260 areas used for the southern African liberation struggle from 1963 to 1994 have been identified by Tanzania's African Liberation Heritage Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and National Service.
Presenting her ministry's budget proposals for the 2023/2024 financial year, Chana said the areas have been identified in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mbeya, Mtwara, Ruvuma, Coast, Morogoro and Lindi regions and in Zanzibar.
"These areas play crucial roles in the history of the African liberation struggle," she said, adding that the African Liberation Heritage Center has managed to collect 22,770 documents that were used during the liberation struggle.
She added that the center has collected various items used during the liberation struggle, including motorcycles, stamps, saucepans, typewriters, first aid kits and tables.
Chana said more than 60,152 tourists, including 152 foreign nationals, visited these areas in the 2022/2023 financial year to learn about the history of the liberation struggle. Enditem
