MAPUTO, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of the Republic of Korea will donate 6.5 million U.S. dollars to Mozambique to build a resilience project that will help its people better cope with the impact of cyclones and other natural disasters, said an official from Mozambique's relief agency, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), on Wednesday.

Teresa Pinto, director of the administration and finance division of INGD, said the project will directly benefit families in Manica, Sofala, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces, typically the most affected by cyclones, covering a total of 343,000 people.

"The initiative will complement the government's efforts in adaptation to climate change, as well as assist local governments in the prevention of multidimensional risks," said Pinto, who was speaking in Maputo during the signing ceremony of the financial agreement with KOICA.

The project, entitled "Promoting Disaster Resilience and Cohesion" in Mozambique from 2023 to 2026, is in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The amount will be used for communities to strengthen infrastructures for access to basic services and livelihoods, so that they can withstand the seasonal passage of cyclones, said the official.

"We hope that the agreement will help the communities in preventing and responding to disasters," she said, adding that the empowerment of women and the protection of more vulnerable families, including war displaced and disabled people, are priorities among the target groups.

KOICA has a history of supporting Mozambique in health, education, water resources, and transport sectors. Enditem
