DAMASCUS, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Syria's tourism sector has recorded an estimated year-on-year growth of 40 percent in the first five months of 2023, Syria's al-Watan newspaper reported on Wednesday.

A total of 727,000 foreign tourists visited Syria between January and May, compared to 519,000 in the same period last year, the newspaper quoted Syrian Tourism Minister Mohammad Rami Martini as saying.

The minister said the future of the tourism sector is promising, noting that the government supports domestic tourism and has formulated plans to renovate hotels and launch new projects this year and next year.

Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the revenue from tourism has declined steeply in the country.

In 2019, Martini said that the losses in the tourism sector were estimated at 2.3 trillion U.S. dollars, including material damages, the destruction of historical sites, unemployment, and significantly lower revenues. Enditem
